Davies' Bayern Future: Crisis or Comeback?

Alphonso Davies faces a critical juncture in his eighth season with Bayern Munich. Following months of contract negotiations and interest from Real Madrid, Davies signed a lucrative extension until 2030 in February 2025, reportedly with a base salary of €15 million. Shortly after, he suffered a severe cruciate ligament tear, missing significant playing time and struggling to regain his previous form.

His return has been hampered by further health setbacks, including a muscle fiber tear that limited his participation in the recent World Cup. While his teammates toured Asia, Davies remained in Munich for rehabilitation and is expected to rejoin team training soon, though he may start on the bench for the Super Cup. This season, he is no longer the undisputed first-choice left-back.

Bayern Munich has signed Nathaniel Brown for €50 million, who is expected to compete directly with Davies. Brown, who excelled at Eintracht Frankfurt and the World Cup, is now considered the favorite for the left-back position. His technical polish and game reading are noted as superior to Davies' athleticism-dependent style, and his recent top speed also surpasses Davies' post-injury decline.

Despite these challenges, Bayern has ruled out selling Davies this summer, citing his positive personality and importance to the North American market. However, if Brown secures the starting role and Davies endures another disappointing season, he could become a sale candidate, similar to other players who signed extensions and then saw their performance decline.
