Tyler Allgeier's Mindset: From Backup to Teammate

Tyler Allgeier has adopted a remarkably positive outlook following the Arizona Cardinals' selection of running back Jeremiyah Love in the 2026 NFL Draft. Initially, one might expect frustration from Allgeier, who recently signed with the Cardinals as a free agent, only for the team to acquire another running back near the top of the first round. This situation echoes his experience in Atlanta, where he rushed for 1,000 yards as a rookie in 2022, only to see the Falcons draft Bijan Robinson the following year, impacting his featured role.

However, Allgeier revealed that first-year Cardinals coach Mike LaFleur proactively communicated with him during or after the draft. LaFleur assured Allgeier that he and Love would form a "really good tandem," a message Allgeier found reassuring. This communication, according to Allgeier, was crucial and respectful, preventing any feelings of being immediately sidelined.

Now deep into training camp, Allgeier confirms that snaps are being split, fostering healthy competition. He shared that jealousy and anger are unproductive emotions, drawing on his upbringing where he often felt overshadowed. Allgeier views the addition of Love, a Heisman Trophy semifinalist, as a "good" move that adds "another weapon" to the offense. His past experience sharing the backfield with Robinson in Atlanta has prepared him to accept his role within Arizona's running back committee, which also includes James Conner, Trey Benson, and Bam Knight. He sees the benefit of having multiple talented backs contributing to the team's success, a strategy increasingly common across the NFL.
