Summary
- Angels secure 16th consecutive state amateur baseball tournament appearance.
- Team's success blends veteran core with impactful new collegiate players.
- Alexandria enters tournament as No. 1 ranked team with a 15-3 record.
The Alexandria Angels have secured their spot in the Class B state amateur baseball tournament for the 16th consecutive season.
This impressive streak dates back to the program's revival in 2011. The team punched its ticket by winning the District 5B championship against the Parkston Rays, marking their 10th district title in the last 14 seasons.
Currently ranked No. 1 in the state with a 15-3 record, the Angels are considered favorites entering the tournament. Their success stems from a blend of veteran players and talented newcomers, especially on the pitching mound.
Key contributors include veteran leaders Jordan and Tyson Gau, Pierce and Peyton Smith, and Jerrod Zens. The team has also been significantly boosted by several Dakota Wesleyan University players, including ace pitcher AJ Wilber (6-2 record, 0.73 ERA) and strong performers like Dakota Munger and Alex Mizsak.
Alexandria opens the state tournament on Thursday against Crofton, Nebraska, at Cadwell Park in Mitchell, carrying significant momentum from winning 11 of their last 12 games.
