Alabama QB Turns to Saban for Advice Before First Start

As the 2025 college football season approaches, Alabama has a new starting quarterback at the helm. Redshirt junior Ty Simpson, who has been with the Crimson Tide for three seasons, was named the team's starting QB just weeks before their season opener against Florida State.

Though Simpson has been with the program for a while, he has limited experience on the field, having attempted just 50 passes over the past three years. In that time, he has completed 29 of those passes for 167 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions. He has also rushed for 130 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries.

Recognizing the pressure and responsibility that comes with being Alabama's starting quarterback, Simpson recently sought advice from legendary coach Nick Saban. Saban, who is now retired from coaching, provided Simpson with some sage wisdom to help him navigate his first college start.

"He was just like, 'Hey, play within yourself. Make sure you keep your team out of negative plays, negative drives,'" Simpson shared. Saban also emphasized the importance of ending each drive with a kick, whether it's an extra point, field goal, or punt, rather than putting the team in a bad position.

This simple but effective advice from Saban is exactly what an inexperienced quarterback like Simpson might need as he takes on the pressure of leading the Crimson Tide. While there is a lot of responsibility that comes with the job, Saban's guidance reminds Simpson that he doesn't need to be a hero on every play. Sometimes, just avoiding mistakes can be just as important as producing highlight-reel moments.

Simpson will have the chance to put Saban's advice into practice when Alabama opens their season on the road against Florida State on Saturday.
