Aaron Donald Returns: Rams' Defensive Star Back on Field

Aaron Donald is set to play in his second debut with the Los Angeles Rams. He took the field on Monday night for the Week 2 matchup against the New York Giants at SoFi Stadium, receiving a loud ovation from the home crowd. This appearance comes after Donald came out of retirement earlier this fall to rejoin the franchise.

Late last month, Donald and the Rams finalized a one-year, $20 million contract that brought him back to the team. He had retired in 2024 after a decade with the Rams, missing the previous two seasons. Throughout his career, Donald accumulated 111 sacks and recorded 53 total tackles in his final season in 2023. He was also a significant contributor to the Rams' Super Bowl victory during the 2021 campaign.

Donald stated he had been training intensely for months leading up to his return announcement. He did not participate in the Rams' season opener against the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne, Australia, choosing instead to remain in California for preparation. Rams head coach Sean McVay had indicated that Donald would be ready to play 'sooner rather than later.'

The Rams aim to recover from a 27-7 loss to the 49ers. Their defensive front receives a significant boost with Donald's return, especially as fellow pass rusher Myles Garrett is sidelined for at least four weeks due to knee surgery. Garrett, acquired by the Rams this past offseason, did not record a tackle in the Week 1 game. While Donald may not entirely fill the void left by Garrett, his return is timely for the Rams' defense.
