49ers' Pearsall Out for Season After Knee Surgery

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall is out for the season after requiring surgery on his right knee. General manager John Lynch confirmed on Saturday that Pearsall will be placed on injured reserve. Pearsall, who turns 26 in September, previously missed eight games in 2025 due to a PCL injury in the same knee.
Following Pearsall's season-ending injury, the 49ers have reacquired former star receiver Deebo Samuel, who previously played six seasons with the team before a trade to the Washington Commanders. Pearsall, a 2024 first-round pick, has appeared in only 20 games over two seasons due to various injuries, including a past shooting incident and a hamstring issue.
Coach Kyle Shanahan had expressed excitement about an offense featuring Pearsall alongside Mike Evans, George Kittle, and Christian McCaffrey. With Pearsall out, rookie De'Zhaun Stribling is expected to see an increased role, especially with veteran Christian Kirk also sidelined with a calf injury. Quarterback Brock Purdy has praised Stribling's progress and reliability.
The 49ers are experiencing a significant number of injuries this season. Besides Pearsall and Kirk, running back Jordan James is out with a rib fracture, and safety Malik Mustapha has a hamstring strain. Swing tackle Vederian Lowe and defensive lineman Gracen Halton are also currently unavailable due to ankle and knee injuries, respectively, sustained during training camp.
