49ers Struggle with Costly Contract Extensions and Injuries
3 Aug
Summary
- 49ers gave out expensive contract extensions to Aiyuk, Purdy, Kittle
- Aiyuk played poorly before injury, Purdy's numbers declined without support
- 49ers may regret Purdy's $53M extension if he struggles again this season

As of August 3rd, 2025, the San Francisco 49ers are facing the consequences of some risky contract decisions made last year. The team gave out several high-priced extensions, including a $30 million per season deal to wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. However, Aiyuk struggled mightily before suffering a knee injury, leaving the 49ers stuck with one of the worst contracts in the NFL.
The 49ers also made a surprising $53 million per season commitment to quarterback Brock Purdy, despite his inconsistent play in the 2024 season. With less offensive support due to injuries this year, Purdy's production has declined, and there are concerns the 49ers may never be able to provide him the same level of support as in his first two seasons.
On a more positive note, the 49ers' extensions to linebacker Fred Warner and tight end George Kittle appear to be paying off, as both players have continued to perform at a high level. However, the team's overall offseason moves have backfired, with key players like Aiyuk and Purdy underperforming and dealing with injuries.
