A dedicated group of former rugby league stars and firefighters recently embarked on an ambitious cycling challenge, covering 250 miles within a single day. This demanding event, branded '100 Laps for Rob,' was held to honor the memory of rugby league icon Rob Burrow, who was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) and passed away in 2024.
The cyclists commenced their journey in East Yorkshire at 04:00 GMT, anticipating completion between 20:00 and 22:00 GMT. The route involved a two-and-a-half-mile loop, with eight core participants completing the entire 400-kilometer distance without stopping. This feat is equivalent to cycling from Hull to Edinburgh, highlighting the extreme endurance required.
The initiative has successfully raised over £9,000 for the Rob Burrow Centre for MND, situated in West Yorkshire. This center provides crucial specialist care and support services for individuals affected by MND. The concept for this significant fundraising ride originated from Winter Olympian Pat Howdle, who also participated in the event.
