Young Scientists Wow Judges with Innovative Environmental Solutions

On October 14, 2025, the top 10 finalists from across the United States competed in the 3M Young Scientists Challenge at the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. These talented young scientists, in grades 5 through 8, presented their innovative projects aimed at tackling real-world problems.
One of the finalists, Sheyna Patel from Orlando, Florida, has created a unique gel that can remove and degrade microplastics in water. "What I essentially created was this gel that's able to remove and degrade microplastics in water," Patel explained. The gel works by attracting the negatively charged microplastics, effectively cleaning the water and the environment.
Another finalist, Amaira Srivastavaa from Gilbert, Arizona, developed the Flavo Peel Cup, a cup made from fruit peels that can replace plastic cups while also providing nutrients to the drinker. "I created the Flavo Peel Cup, which is a cup made out of fruit peels that I created to do three things, which is, one, reduce plastic pollution. Because the cups are made out of bioplastic, they have the ability to replace plastic cups while also giving people nutrients," Srivastavaa said.

The young scientists showcased their creativity, resilience, and drive to solve pressing environmental problems. "These are incredibly talented young scientists. They are creative, they're resilient and they have really a drive to solve problems," said mentor Rodrigo Marmol.
The winner of the 3M Young Scientists Challenge will be announced on October 15, 2025, and will receive the title of America's Top Young Scientist and a $25,000 prize.
