Campus Spit Test: Virus Watch for Pandemic Prevention

The University of Windsor is actively engaged in a crucial research project focused on preventing future pandemics by studying how viruses spread. Scientists at the institution are calling for saliva samples from students and staff, even those feeling unwell.

This initiative aims to develop a robust system capable of detecting seasonal viruses and enabling a swift response. Professor Kenneth Ng highlighted the necessity of such preparedness, noting the lack of such systems before the recent global health crisis.

Complementing the saliva collection, the university employs a wastewater surveillance program. This method provides rapid insights into community health trends, acting as a broad monitoring tool. Both approaches feed into public health efforts to enhance disease control and public communication strategies.
