Wastewater Reveals Drug Use Peaks During Events
27 Apr
Summary
- Drug use in wastewater spikes during holidays and events.
- Cocaine and ketamine use highest compared to Europe.
- Drug seizures significantly impact consumption in cities.

Wastewater testing across England has uncovered significant spikes in illicit drug consumption coinciding with major events, including bank holidays, heatwaves, and the Eurovision song contest. This detailed investigation, one of the most comprehensive in a single country, analyzed over 1,700 water samples.
Researchers identified particularly high levels of cocaine and ketamine use, exceeding those at other European monitoring sites. Cocaine use peaked during weekends and holidays, while ketamine use remained consistently high throughout the week, raising concerns about its routine adoption. The study indicates that drug seizures can substantially reduce consumption in urban centers.
Findings from this project, led by Imperial College London for the Home Office, will aid emergency services in preparing for potential increases in overdoses and drug-related incidents. Public health messaging can also be enhanced to mitigate harm, especially concerning the risks associated with drug use during hot weather or when mixed with alcohol.
