Summary
- Walrus skull with narwhal tusk fragment found on Prince George Land Island.
- The walrus lived with the embedded tusk for over a year before death.
- The rare find occurred during the Arctic Floating University expedition.

During the recent Arctic Floating University expedition, scientists unearthed a remarkable find on the island of Prince George Land in the Franz Josef Land Archipelago. They discovered the skull of an adult walrus with a fragment of a narwhal tusk embedded within its nasal opening.
Zoologists analyzing the remains determined that the walrus had lived with the foreign object for more than a year. The tusk was so firmly lodged in the skull that it could not be moved, suggesting the animal adapted to its presence despite its proximity to the eye socket.
The skull was found close to the coastline, with remnants of soft tissue indicating a recent death. Researchers speculate a polar bear may have moved the skull and other skeletal parts from the water's edge. This discovery is significant as scientific literature rarely documents interactions, let alone conflicts, between walruses and narwhals, despite their overlapping habitats and food sources.
The Russian Arctic National Park will house the find. Both the Atlantic walrus and the narwhal, known as the 'sea unicorn,' are listed in the Russian Federation's Red Data Book and inhabit the waters of the Franz Josef Land Archipelago.
