Metal Detectorist Discovers 10-Pound Viking Hoard

The most substantial Viking Age silver hoard discovered in Finland has been unearthed by a metal detectorist, containing approximately 10 pounds of coins and jewelry. This remarkable find was located about 95 miles north of Helsinki and had been concealed within birch-bark containers.

The silver artifacts, believed to date between A.D. 1000 and 1050, are currently undergoing cleaning and detailed analysis. The hoard includes numerous coins originating from regions corresponding to modern-day Germany, Sweden, and Great Britain, alongside Islamic dirhams and jewelry, including a silver bracelet and hack silver.

This hoard significantly surpasses Finland's previous largest Viking Age find from 1895 in weight and quantity. While the period is termed the Viking Age, archaeologists clarify that Finland was not culturally or politically part of Viking Scandinavia, but rather adopted the term to designate the era.

Further archaeological investigation of the burial site and its surroundings is planned. Specialists will then meticulously identify the coins, with scientific articles anticipated to detail the entire hoard and its individual components.
