Summary
- Video games can modestly improve memory, attention, and thinking.
- A review of 133 studies analyzed 14,245 participants.
- Action games excel at enhancing attention control and speed.

A recent review of research indicates that playing video games can yield modest improvements in memory, attention, and other cognitive abilities. The extent of these benefits varies depending on the type of game played.
The study, published in Acta Psychologica, synthesized findings from 133 studies encompassing 14,245 participants. Researchers conducted three meta-analyses to assess the impact of various game genres on cognition.
Interactive games were found to aid working memory and task-switching. Action and fast-paced games significantly demand peripheral vision, divided attention, and predictive abilities. Consistent players of action games demonstrated superior attention control and processing speed compared to non-gamers.
Strategy and simulation games, requiring planning and resource management, were linked to enhanced problem-solving and cognitive flexibility. The overall effect size across studies was modest, ranging from small to moderate for memory, processing speed, and task-switching.
Researchers noted that while gaming offers cognitive advantages, excessive play could detract from academic activities. Crucially, factors like gender, age, health, game type, and cultural context did not significantly alter these cognitive benefits. These insights suggest that video games can contribute to cognitive enhancement.
