NASA's Lunar Leap: Two US Landers Set Stage for Return
3 Mar
Summary
- Two US landers, Firefly's Blue Ghost and IM's Athena, were on the moon in March 2025.
- These missions supported NASA's Artemis program for astronaut return to the moon.
- Commercial Lunar Payload Services program facilitated these private lunar deliveries.

In March 2025, the moon briefly hosted two American lunar landers simultaneously. Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost and Intuitive Machines' Athena, both Texas-based companies, achieved separate landings on Earth's celestial neighbor. These missions were crucial for NASA's ambitious Artemis program, which plans to return astronauts to the lunar surface.
Firefly's Blue Ghost landed on March 3, 2025, near Mons Latreille, deploying scientific instruments for a full lunar day. Intuitive Machines' Athena landed on March 6, 2025, near Mons Mouton, aiming to hunt for water ice at the lunar south pole. Although Athena tipped over upon landing, hampering its objectives, both missions contributed vital data.
These endeavors were undertaken through NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services program, a cost-effective strategy for private lunar deliveries. The data and technology tested by these uncrewed missions are integral to astronaut missions and the long-term goal of establishing a permanent lunar base. From this base, NASA intends to launch its first crewed missions to Mars.
NASA's Artemis 2 mission, scheduled for liftoff as early as April, will send astronauts on a journey around the moon. Following this, Artemis 4 is slated for a lunar landing as early as 2028. These steps underscore America's renewed commitment to lunar exploration and future interplanetary travel.
