Future Food: York Uni Explores Insect Research in Containers
13 Jan
Summary
- Shipping containers proposed for insect engineering research at University of York.
- Research will focus on novel food, animal feed, and waste management.
- The project aims to enhance York's reputation for scientific innovation.

The University of York is considering a novel approach to advancing insect engineering research by utilizing repurposed shipping containers. Two such units are planned for the Heslington West Campus, designed to house climate-controlled breeding and nursery spaces for insects. This specialized infrastructure will enable precise regulation of temperature, CO2, and humidity, crucial for controlled experimentation.
The research endeavors will primarily focus on black soldier flies, investigating their potential for producing new food sources and animal feed. Additionally, the project aims to leverage insects for effective waste management solutions. The scope of research may also extend to other species, including mosquitoes and various pests affecting plant and animal life.
