Scientists at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru, in collaboration with MS Ramaiah Medical College, have identified a novel application for ultrasound stimulation in treating oral cancer. This development holds significant promise, particularly for India, where oral cancer is highly prevalent. The study revealed that oral cancer cells exhibit a distinct vulnerability to low-frequency ultrasound (LFU) mechanostimulation, a non-invasive procedure.
Utilizing a specialized 3D co-culture platform designed to replicate tumor conditions, the research demonstrated that cancer cells could be selectively targeted. Unlike high-frequency ultrasound or High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU), LFU offers a gentler approach without generating heat, thus minimizing side effects. This selective efficacy is attributed to lower levels of the protein Tropomyosin 2.1 in cancer cells, making them less resilient to the applied mechanical forces.
The potential applications extend beyond oral cancer, with possibilities for treating other superficial cancers such as breast cancer and melanoma. The IISc team has also secured a patent for this innovative ultrasound technology. While promising, further considerations regarding potential spillage of cancer cells into adjacent tissues will be crucial before clinical widespread adoption.
