India Misses Total Solar Eclipse Tonight!

A total solar eclipse is occurring today, marking the first such event visible from anywhere on Earth in 28 months. Mainland Europe will witness totality for the first time in 27 years, since August 1999. However, India will not see any part of this eclipse as it unfolds between 9 PM and 2:15 AM IST, well after sunset across the subcontinent.

The path of totality will sweep across the Arctic, Greenland, Iceland, the North Atlantic, northern Spain, and Portugal. A partial eclipse will be observable in much of Europe, parts of Africa, and North America. For viewers in Spain, the Sun will be low on the horizon, presenting unique photographic opportunities but also increased risk from atmospheric conditions.

Traditional Hindu observances, such as sutak kaal, will not apply in India due to the eclipse's invisibility. For those in regions where the eclipse is visible, strict eye safety is paramount. Certified eclipse glasses or solar viewers are required, with the exception of the brief period of totality itself. Photographing the event requires proper solar filters, which must be removed only during full totality.

This eclipse is notable for its rarity and the unusually close proximity of the Moon, enhancing the visual experience. India will next have an opportunity to witness a total solar eclipse on its soil in March 2034.
