Summary
- Soft robot with cilia manipulates blood flow for drug delivery.
- Robot dissolved blood clots in laboratory models faster.
- Successfully captured rare cancer cells from liver patients.

Scientists have engineered a microscopic soft robot named CiliaVine, designed to navigate the bloodstream and manipulate fluid dynamics. This innovative device utilizes magnetic fields to control hair-like cilia, enabling precise actions such as directing drugs to vessel walls and accelerating the breakdown of blood clots.
In laboratory settings, CiliaVine demonstrated significant improvements in drug delivery, with 146% more reaching the vessel wall compared to natural spread. It also expedited clot dissolution in model vessels, reducing the time from 70 to approximately 40 minutes. This technology holds promise for enhanced medical interventions within blood vessels.
Furthermore, CiliaVine has shown remarkable potential in cancer diagnostics. By coating the robot with antibodies, researchers were able to capture rare circulating tumor cells from all 23 liver cancer patients tested. Pre-clinical trials in rabbits with liver tumors showed no adverse effects, indicating a promising safety profile for future applications in human health.
