SpaceX Readies Largest Rocket Ever for Texas Launch
14 May
Summary
- Starship V3, 407 feet tall, is SpaceX's largest rocket yet.
- Launch scheduled for May 19, aiming for orbit and refueling tests.
- Upgrades include modified grid fins and enhanced propulsion systems.

SpaceX is preparing to launch Starship Version 3 (V3) on May 19, marking the debut of the largest and most powerful rocket the company has ever constructed. This new iteration stands approximately 407 feet tall and features significant upgrades to both its Super Heavy booster and Starship upper stage.
The primary objective of this flight test, designated flight 12, is to evaluate these new hardware components in a real flight environment. If successful, Starship V3 could achieve orbit and demonstrate crucial mid-flight refueling capabilities, a necessary step for enabling human missions to Mars and supporting NASA's Artemis lunar program.
Key enhancements for V3 include reducing the number of grid fins on the Super Heavy booster to three while increasing their size and strength. The upper stage has undergone a propulsion system redesign allowing for increased fuel capacity for extended missions. The rocket's Raptor engines have also been upgraded for greater liftoff thrust.
This launch will occur from a newly upgraded launch pad at SpaceX's Starbase facility in Texas. Pad 2 features an enhanced propellant farm for faster vehicle filling and shorter mechanical arms on the launch tower, nicknamed 'chopsticks,' designed for quicker engagement with the descending booster.
