A startup named Stardust Solutions, founded in 2023, is advancing solar geoengineering, a technology designed to artificially reduce global temperatures by dimming the sun. The company's approach involves spraying engineered particles, derived from common food additives and minerals found in eggshells, into the stratosphere. This method aims to reflect solar energy back into space, similar to how volcanic eruptions can temporarily cool the planet.

While the company's CEO, Yanai Yedvab, emphasizes that this is not a sole solution for climate change but a critical tool for consideration, many scientists and experts raise significant concerns. These include the potential for disastrous global repercussions, such as altered weather patterns, and ethical questions surrounding private companies developing technology with profound and unpredictable consequences for the entire planet. Researchers are particularly wary of the "termination shock" risk if the process were to cease abruptly.

Stardust Solutions has raised $75 million to fund its research and development, focusing on safer alternatives to sulfur dioxide, a common geoengineering agent with known negative impacts. The company plans to conduct small-scale laboratory tests before moving to outdoor trials, asserting that any deployment decisions would ultimately rest with governments. However, critics argue that the profit motive of a private company conflicts with the transparency required for such research, and that current science does not support placing financial bets on specific geoengineering approaches.
