On August 25th, sunspot region AR4513, identified as the most complex active region on the visible solar disk, unleashed five M-class solar flares. The most powerful of these was an M6.9 event, which caused a moderate radio blackout. Four additional M-class flares resulted in minor radio blackouts across various regions, including the Philippine Sea and the Pacific west of Central America.
Forecasters are now tracking a potential Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) from this activity, alongside a separate high-speed solar wind stream expected to influence near-Earth space from late August 27th into early August 28th. This combined arrival could significantly increase geomagnetic activity, with unsettled to active conditions predicted, possibly reaching minor storm levels.
Such geomagnetic activity may enhance aurora displays, potentially visible closer to midlatitudes. AR4513 continues to pose a threat for additional M-class flares and possibly stronger X-class eruptions. The key dates for potential impact are August 27th and 28th, when the solar wind stream and the possible CME could arrive.
