Eclipse Art: From Ancient Scrawls to Cosmic Proof

Throughout human history, total solar eclipses, occurring roughly every 18 months, have captivated observers. Ancient scribes in China, as early as the 13th century BC, documented these events, describing the sun as "eaten." A petroglyph by the early Pueblo people in New Mexico, dated to 1097, is believed to represent a solar eclipse, with its swirling patterns resembling the sun's corona.

Later centuries saw artistic and scientific depictions of eclipses. French missionaries in the late 17th century, alongside Siamese royalty, used projection methods for safe viewing. By the early 19th century, astronomers like José Joaquín de Ferrer began formally naming solar features, such as the corona, which he hypothesized as part of the sun due to its immense size.

The first scientifically useful photograph of a solar eclipse's corona was taken in 1851 in Prussia. Subsequent photographic advancements, like those from 1854 Philadelphia, captured increasingly detailed images. A pivotal 1919 expedition to Principe photographed stars near the sun during an eclipse, providing early evidence for Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity by showing the sun's gravity bending starlight.

Modern imaging, such as that from an 1991 eclipse in California, reveals the corona's extreme temperature, posing mysteries about solar activity and its potential impact on Earthly systems. Studying animal reactions during eclipses, as observed in Chile in 2019, offers insights into their perception of sudden darkness. Satellite imagery from an April 2024 eclipse clearly shows the moon's shadow traversing Earth, illustrating the vast scale of these phenomena.
