An exceptional Roman shipwreck, dating back to 20-50 AD, has been discovered in Lake Neuchâtel, Switzerland. The well-preserved cargo of this ancient merchant vessel includes hundreds of meticulously crafted dishes and bowls from the Swiss Plateau, as well as amphorae used for transporting olive oil from Hispania.
Among the remarkable finds are everyday items belonging to the crew, such as tools and wagon parts. The wagon wheels are considered the only Roman examples of their kind ever found in Switzerland. A sword discovered at the site suggests the vessel may have had a military escort.
