Robots to 3D Print Mars Habitats
3 Nov
Summary
- Autonomous robots could build a base on Mars using 3D printing.
- Robots would use Martian soil and basalt for construction.
- First manned missions to Mars are optimistically scheduled for the 2030s.

Autonomous robots could pave the way for human settlement on Mars by constructing habitats prior to astronaut arrivals. British firm Foster and Partners proposes that these robots could 3D print structures utilizing Martian soil.
This concept involves deploying smaller robots that collectively build larger habitats. Such a strategy enhances mission resilience, as the failure of one robot would not jeopardize the entire mission. The proposed base models have been 3D printed using basalt, a material similar to that found on Mars.
While the United States has directed efforts toward returning to the Moon and ultimately reaching Mars, companies like SpaceX are developing launch vehicles for these interplanetary journeys. The earliest manned missions to Mars are tentatively planned for the 2030s.
