Ancient City Unearthed Beneath Puri
26 Mar
Summary
- Radar survey suggests ancient city remains beneath Puri.
- Possible tunnel links Jagannath Temple to the sea.
- 43 potential heritage sites and artifacts discovered.

A recent Ground Penetrating Radar survey in Puri, Odisha, has revealed evidence suggesting the presence of an ancient city beneath the surface.
The survey, conducted as part of the Srimandir Parikrama project, detected structural traces across multiple locations, including near the Emar Math and the 12th-century Puri Jagannath Temple.
Experts identified 43 potential heritage sites and underground deposits of pottery and everyday items, indicating a once-flourishing settlement. Notably, a possible tunnel linking the Shree Jagannath Temple to the sea was hinted at by the radar data.
Researchers recommend careful excavation and preservation efforts for this significant archaeological discovery. A draft report from 2022 also pointed to a 30-foot-long wall and a chamber, possibly from the East Ganga Dynasty era.
Separately, an inventory of the Jagannath Temple's Ratna Bhandar (treasure trove) was recently completed after nearly five decades, with items digitally documented using 3D mapping technology.
