A groundbreaking survey conducted from July 23 to 26 has revealed the rich moth diversity of Puducherry, documenting 118 species for the first time. Organized by Svarnim, Sri Aurobindo Society, as part of the annual international National Moth Week, the event involved 22 participants including students and researchers.
The survey took place at Aurovanam, a biodiversity hotspot known for its varied habitats. Participants used light-trapping techniques to record species after sunset, contributing valuable data for future ecological monitoring. Moths, though less recognized than butterflies, are essential pollinators and a critical food source for many animals, serving as indicators of environmental health.
Beyond moths, the four-day event also logged 96 species of butterflies and odonates, 43 bird species, and numerous other insects and amphibians. Organizers plan to develop a comprehensive moth checklist for Aurovanam to track seasonal variations in diversity. This initiative underscores the importance of citizen science in understanding and conserving local biodiversity.
