A spectacular celestial event is anticipated between August 12 and 14 as the Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak activity. This year's meteor shower coincides with a total solar eclipse scheduled for Wednesday, August 12, 2026.
During the peak, astronomers expect up to 90 meteors per hour, enhanced by the new moon phase, promising dark skies ideal for viewing. The total solar eclipse will offer a brief period of darkness for a few minutes, with totality lasting 2 minutes and 18 seconds.
Unfortunately, the total solar eclipse will not be visible in the United States. Viewers wishing to experience totality must travel to Iceland, Greenland, or parts of Spain. Some areas in the northeastern U.S. may witness a partial solar eclipse, with minimal sun coverage.
Despite the lack of a total or partial eclipse view in Alabama and Georgia, residents can still enjoy the Perseid meteor shower. The predawn hours of Wednesday, August 12, and Thursday, August 13, are predicted to be the best times for viewing the shower's intensity.
