Meteorite Hunter Finds NZ's 11th Space Rock!

A network of 200 cameras across New Zealand has aided citizen scientists in locating the country's 11th confirmed meteorite. The discovery occurred after a brilliant meteor and loud boom were observed over the North Island on July 28. Citizen astronomer Steve Wyn-Harris found a small stone, which, after a magnetic test on a video call with experts, showed promising signs. This find led to a targeted search based on flight path data and wind conditions.

Wyn-Harris located the first fragment near a riverbank just before a planned wider search. This initial discovery, weighing eight grams, was followed by the recovery of three more fragments by a team of 11 over ten days, bringing the total weight to 75 grams. The fragments, identified as 'ordinary chondrites,' are believed to have originated from the asteroid belt.

Further analysis of the four fragments will be conducted by geologist Dr. Marshall Palmer. Experts suggest these meteorites may share a common origin with New Zealand's first meteorite, found in 1863, indicating a shared history from an ancient asteroid within the solar system.
