Aurora Alert: 22 US States See Northern Lights!
7 Oct
Summary
- Northern lights expected across up to 22 US states and Canada.
- A full halo coronal mass ejection caused the potential display.
- New moon on Oct. 10 offers dark skies for viewing opportunities.

The night sky across parts of up to 22 U.S. states and Canada could be illuminated by the northern lights. This spectacular display is anticipated overnight on Thursday, October 8, extending into the early hours of Friday, October 9. The event is a direct result of a full halo coronal mass ejection (CME) that erupted from the sun on October 6.
NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a geomagnetic storm watch, indicating that G1 to G2-class conditions are likely upon the CME's arrival. If G1 conditions materialize, the aurora may be visible in states like Alaska and eleven northern contiguous states. Should activity reach G2 levels, the auroral oval could extend further south, potentially allowing viewing in ten additional states.
The timing is particularly favorable for skywatchers and photographers. A new moon on October 10 promises dark rural skies, crucial for observing faint auroral displays. However, visibility ultimately depends on the solar wind's strength, prevailing cloud cover, and the magnetic orientation of the incoming solar material.
