9 Oct
Summary
- Nikon disqualified first place video for using generative AI.
- The video showed cilia movement in a child's airway.
- Nikon will revise competition rules for future entries.

Nikon has disqualified the initial first-place winner of its Small World in Motion contest due to the undisclosed use of generative AI. The video, submitted by Dr. Ning Xu, purportedly showed microscopic cilia moving within a child's airway, a condition known as PCD.
Concerns about the video's authenticity surfaced online, prompting Nikon to review the entry. Dr. Xu later confirmed the use of AI for post-processing to enhance visual distinctions in reconstructed images.
As a result, the disqualified video has been removed, and a different entry by Nguyen Nam Nhat now holds the top position. Nikon indicated that it will revisit its competition rules and evaluation processes for future submissions.
