New Tick Virus Found: Flu-Like Illness In China
5 Sep
Summary
- A new tick-borne virus, ALTNV, causes flu-like illness.
- Researchers identified the virus in 10.4% of tick-bitten patients.
- Fatal cases involved co-infection with DBV, causing SFTS.

A previously unknown tick-borne virus, identified as the Asian longhorned tick nairovirus (ALTNV), has been discovered by scientists in China. This new virus, a member of the orthonairovirus group, is capable of inducing symptoms similar to the flu, including fever, fatigue, and gastrointestinal distress.
Researchers identified ALTNV in 10.4% of 3,163 patients who had been bitten by ticks, indicating its presence in tick populations. While ALTNV can lead to reduced blood platelet counts, it was not directly linked to severe bleeding or fatalities in the study. However, patients co-infected with ALTNV and another virus, Dabie bandavirus (DBV), experienced more severe respiratory and kidney complications, with a significant mortality rate.
The findings, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, underscore the importance of identifying specific tick-borne viruses for appropriate treatment. As ticks can carry numerous pathogens, ongoing research and improved diagnostic capabilities are crucial for public health, especially in regions endemic for severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS).
