Presidential Name graces New Indian Herb

A novel herb species, Leucas droupadiae, has been identified along the coastal dunes of Tamil Nadu, India. This discovery adds to India's botanical records and was named after President Droupadi Murmu. Environmentalist Jasmit Singh Arora noted the plant's unique characteristics, including its upright growth on a single stem and shallow, web-like root system, distinguishing it from relatives with deep taproots.

Leucas droupadiae also features distinctive golden-yellow fruits with dark brown spots. The arduous process of confirming a new plant species involves studying its entire life cycle and comparing it against thousands of known specimens globally. This new finding underscores the hidden biodiversity within India's coastal sand dunes, emphasizing that these areas are not wastelands but crucial habitats for specialized life.

Currently, Leucas droupadiae is classified as 'Data Deficient' due to its limited known habitat in Cuddalore and threats from animal grazing and eucalyptus tree encroachment. Conservation efforts suggested include protecting its habitat by restricting grazing, managing eucalyptus plantations, and potentially establishing a protected nature area to safeguard its survival and the unique ecosystem it inhabits.
