Summary
- A new crustacean genus and species, Indiaphonte bijoyi, was discovered.
- These microscopic organisms play a vital role in marine ecosystems.
- They are crucial for producing omega-3 fatty acids essential for fish growth.

A minuscule crustacean, discovered in the Kavaratti lagoon of the Lakshadweep islands, has been formally identified as a new genus and species. Named Indiaphonte bijoyi, this organism from the Laophontidae family is so small it requires microscopic examination for study.
The scientific description was a collaboration between Neelima Vasu K. of Cusat and Samuel E. Gómez-Noguera from UNAM University, Mexico, published in the journal Zootaxa. This new genus, Indiaphonte, was established due to its unique combination of traits previously unrecorded within its family.
