99 New Beetle Species Found on Qinghai-Tibet Plateau
1 Apr
Summary
- One new insect genus, Medogia, and 99 new species discovered.
- Medog county is a key biodiversity hotspot for new discoveries.
- Findings aid research on beetle origin and evolution in China.

A joint research effort by Chinese scientists has unveiled a remarkable expansion of known insect diversity, announcing the discovery of one new genus and 99 new species. The study, published in Zootaxa, highlights the unique biodiversity of China's Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
The newly identified genus, named Medogia, is exclusively found in Medog county, located in the Xizang autonomous region. This region proved to be exceptionally rich, with 62 of the 99 new species identified there, underscoring its importance.
Further findings include 22 new species from other areas within Xizang and 15 from different provincial-level regions across China. Beetles, as a diverse insect group, are crucial indicators of environmental health.
These findings significantly bolster baseline data on beetle diversity in southwest China. They offer vital scientific backing for ongoing research into the origins, evolution, and dispersal patterns of the region's beetle fauna.
