Astronomers Find Mysterious 'Hypersoft' X-ray Sources

Researchers have uncovered a novel category of celestial objects, dubbed 'hypersoft' X-ray sources, within galaxies close to our own. These objects emit X-rays primarily at the lowest energy levels, a signal previously overlooked in data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory collected between 1999 and 2017. Mustafa Muhibullah, a graduate student at the University of Alabama, led the research.
The newly identified sources are abundant and highly luminous. Scientists theorize they could be precursors to certain types of supernovas or complex triple-star systems involving collapsed black holes. This finding addresses the challenge of accounting for the observed rate of Type 1a supernovas and explains certain ionized elements in galactic environments.
Initial searches of six galaxies revealed 84 such objects, with further analysis of four additional galaxies bringing the total to 145. Previously, astronomers had classified some low-energy X-ray emitters as 'supersoft,' but these new findings represent a distinct, more extreme subset. The implications of these 'hypersoft' sources could significantly advance our understanding of stellar evolution and cosmic phenomena.
