Turkey Feed Breakthrough: Natural Compounds Boost Growth
2 Oct
Summary
- Natural thymol and formic acid blend improved turkey weight gain.
- Feed efficiency increased, reducing the amount of feed required.
- Meat quality enhanced with more protein, less fat, and better texture.
A groundbreaking study involving researchers from Hyderabad has unveiled a potent blend of thymol and formic acid that significantly enhances turkey growth and feed efficiency. This natural compound combination shows promise as a viable alternative to antibiotic growth promoters in commercial turkey farming.
The trial, which monitored 240 turkeys over 16 weeks, found that a specific ratio of thymol (240 mg/kg) and formic acid (7.5 ml/kg) led to the highest live weight gain and a better feed conversion ratio. This suggests a more efficient use of feed for weight increase.
Further analysis revealed improvements in meat quality, including increased dressing percentage and enhanced yields of breast, drumstick, and thigh meat. The supplemented turkey meat exhibited higher crude protein and ash content, along with reduced fat and lower fat oxidation, contributing to better antioxidant activity and juiciness.
This research suggests that utilizing natural compounds like thymol and formic acid could address concerns regarding antibiotic residues and antimicrobial resistance in poultry. The findings point towards a more sustainable and healthier approach to commercial turkey production.
