Mt. Danxiashan, a spectacular geopark in Shaoguan, Guangdong province, has evolved over four decades into a globally recognized UNESCO World Heritage site. Officially recognized in August 2010 as part of the "China Danxia" collective, the park now covers 292 square kilometers and features over 680 peaks, famed for their red cliffs and unique geological formations.
The landscape, named "Danxia" for its cinnabar-red glow, is a prime example of this geological phenomenon. It is also a rich biodiversity hotspot, identified in 1987 with the discovery of the Danxia parasol tree. As of April 2026, surveys documented 2,341 higher plant species and 2,539 wildlife species, with 59 new species discovered, many endemic to the mountain.
Recognized as a leading science education base, Mt. Danxiashan offers ecological activities like bird and firefly watching. Its programs focus on geology, ecology, and culture, transforming the area into an outdoor classroom. Annually, the site welcomes over 400,000 students for nature-focused educational experiences along its scenic boardwalks.
