Moon's South Pole Holds Hidden Water Ice!
27 May
Summary
- Indian scientists found signs of subsurface water ice.
- Evidence points to ice within shadowed lunar craters.
- Findings impact future lunar exploration and resource use.

Signs of subsurface water ice have been detected near the Moon's south pole by scientists at the Indian Space Research Organisation. The Chandrayaan-2 lunar orbiter's radar data revealed evidence of this ice hidden beneath four permanently shadowed craters.
One particular area, a 1.1 kilometer region within the Faustini crater, exhibited particularly strong signatures. Surface features and radar echoes in this permanently sunlit zone suggest the presence of buried ice.
These discoveries offer crucial new insights into the distribution of volatile compounds at the lunar poles. They hold substantial implications for future lunar exploration endeavors, particularly in identifying regions rich in ice for potential landing sites and in-situ resource utilization.
