24 Jun
Summary
- Engineering students launched a 13ft rocket named Gryphon II.
- The rocket was launched from Cape Wrath, Scotland, on Friday.
- Students are now searching for the missing rocket in the sea.

A group of engineering students from Leeds University successfully launched a 13ft rocket, named Gryphon II, from a military training range at Cape Wrath in northern Scotland. The launch took place on Friday, with the team aiming to send the rocket 50,000ft into the atmosphere and potentially break a UK amateur altitude record.
However, the Gryphon II did not splash down in the anticipated sea location following its ascent. Members of the Leeds University Rocketry Association (Lura) are now undertaking a wide-ranging search for their missing spacecraft. They are collaborating with local fishermen to scour a significant area of the sea, hoping the rocket may have washed ashore on the north Highland coast or drifted towards Orkney or Shetland.
