Microplastics, tiny fragments under 5 mm, have been discovered in marine animals living around deep-sea hydrothermal vents, over 2,000 meters below the ocean surface. A study published in Water Research found these plastic pieces in 92 percent of examined snails and mussels from the North Fiji Basin and Central Indian Ridge.
An average of 3.42 plastic pieces were found per animal, with polystyrene being the most prevalent. The research indicates differences in microplastic distribution between snails and mussels, attributing it to their distinct feeding behaviors. Snails showed concentrated plastics in digestive organs, while mussels had them more evenly distributed.
Animals from the Indian Ocean exhibited considerably higher microplastic concentrations than those from the southwestern Pacific. This disparity suggests regional variations in human pollution, ocean currents, and river networks significantly influence microplastic accumulation in these isolated ecosystems.
These findings underscore the pervasive nature of plastic pollution and highlight the urgent need for source reduction. Tackling plastic waste through improved recycling and alternative materials is crucial, as deep-sea cleanup is impractical. The presence of microplastics in these remote environments emphasizes the global scale of the pollution crisis.
