Furthermore, the study, published in July 2026, revealed a previously uncharacterized strain of Plasmodium falciparum in the bones of Cardinal Giovanni de' Medici, who died in 1562. This ancient parasite's genetic makeup holds significant implications for understanding malaria's evolution and its resistance to modern drugs.
The Yale and University of Pisa team extracted DNA from rib samples of both brothers. The genetic fragments, though degraded, were sequenced using targeted enrichment.
