Mars Rover Unearths Ancient River Delta Below Surface

NASA's Perseverance rover has identified buried remnants of an ancient river delta beneath the surface of Mars, providing significant new evidence of the planet's watery past. Using ground-penetrating radar, the rover mapped geological features located up to 115 feet underground within Jezero Crater.
These newly detected deltaic sediments are estimated to be between 3.7 and 4.2 billion years old. This predates another known surface delta in the same crater, suggesting a complex history of water activity on Mars relatively early in its existence.
The rover's RIMFAX instrument collected the deep subsurface data between September 2023 and February 2024. Scientists are particularly interested in this evidence due to water's crucial role in the potential for past life on Mars.
Researchers believe the ancient water-rich environment identified by Perseverance could have been capable of preserving biosignatures. This discovery further underscores the value of ground-penetrating radar as a tool for studying Martian geology and the planet's potential habitability.
