NYC Sun Aligns With Skyscrapers Tonight!
11 Jul
Summary
- The sun aligns with Manhattan's grid for a stunning sunset.
- Manhattanhenge occurs twice a year due to street grid rotation.
- Special events and prime viewing spots enhance the spectacle.

The second and final Manhattanhenge of 2026 illuminates New York City this weekend, offering a spectacular alignment of the setting sun with the urban grid. This phenomenon occurs when the sun positions itself perfectly between the towering skyscrapers.
The unique urban design of Manhattan, with its street grid rotated 30 degrees east of geographic north, causes this celestial event to happen on dates different from the equinoxes. Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson coined the term "Manhattanhenge" in 2002.
On Saturday, July 11, 2026, at 8:20 p.m. ET, a "full sun on the grid" will be visible. A "half sun on the grid" will follow on Sunday, July 12, 2026, at 8:21 p.m. ET.
Prime viewing locations include east-west thoroughfares, with viewers advised to position themselves as far east as possible for a clear view toward New Jersey across the Hudson River. The event lasts only a few minutes, and crowds are expected, necessitating early arrival.
The American Museum of Natural History is hosting a block party on Saturday. Other cities with grid systems, such as Chicago and Baltimore, experience similar events.
