Wales' 'Pompeii': Hidden Roman Villa Unearthed
20 Jan
Summary
- Largest Roman villa ever found in Wales discovered.
- Ground radar technology revealed the huge structure.
- Site in Margam Country Park is remarkably well-preserved.

A significant archaeological discovery has been made in Wales with the unearthing of the largest Roman villa ever found in the country. Located within the historic deer park of Margam Country Park near Port Talbot, the villa was detected using advanced ground-penetrating radar, which indicated a substantial structure hidden just below the surface.
Experts, including Dr. Alex Langlands from Swansea University, expressed astonishment at the find, describing it as a crucial missing piece in the understanding of South Wales' Romano-British period. The site's location in Margam, an area known for other historical monuments but lacking Romano-British evidence, makes this villa particularly important.
Due to the undisturbed nature of the land, researchers anticipate the villa to be exceptionally well-preserved, potentially justifying comparisons to Pompeii. Immediate priorities include conserving the site while efforts are made to secure funding for a full excavation, which is planned for the future.
