Scientists have identified the largest newly formed crater ever discovered in the solar system, located on the Moon. This significant feature, measuring 222 meters (728 feet) across and 43 meters deep, resulted from an impact event described as a once-in-a-century occurrence.
The crater, officially named McGetchin, was discovered using images from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera. It formed between April 11 and May 22, 2024, when an object the size of a three- to six-story building struck the lunar surface.
This powerful collision not only created the crater but also generated a 'cold spot' about seven kilometers wide. In this area, nighttime temperatures are up to nine degrees Celsius (16 degrees Fahrenheit) lower than in surrounding regions. Researchers attribute this to the impact loosening the lunar regolith, reducing its heat retention.
The discovery occurs as the Moon becomes a focal point for international space exploration, with the U.S. Artemis program aiming for a crewed landing by 2028 and China and Russia planning a joint lunar research station by the mid-2030s.
