11 Mar
Summary
- Experimental pill BL-001 aims to replicate keto diet's fat-burning effects.
- Pill shifts gut microbiome to burn fat, bypassing strict carb restriction.
- Early trials show weight loss with no reported safety concerns.

Scientists in California are developing an experimental pill, BL-001, designed to deliver the weight loss effects of the keto diet without the need for strict carbohydrate restriction. This novel approach aims to shift the gut microbiome, prompting the body to burn fat for energy, much like the high-fat, low-carb keto diet.
Early Phase 1 trials involving healthy and overweight adults demonstrated positive outcomes. Over 28 days, participants who took the pill once daily experienced an average weight loss of 2.3 percent of their body weight, with no safety concerns noted. Researchers also observed maintained weight loss in 80 percent of users for at least two weeks post-treatment.
Further trials are planned, including a Phase 1B study in Australia with obese adults. The developers, Bloom Science, believe BL-001 holds significant potential not only for obesity treatment but also for conditions like Dravet syndrome, a rare form of epilepsy. The pill offers a potentially safer and more patient-friendly alternative to current therapies, aiming for sustainable weight loss and improved long-term compliance.
