Kerala Flood Resilience: AI to Predict Disasters
15 Aug
Summary
- AI, ML, and remote sensing recommended for flood prediction.
- Initiative aims to mitigate disasters aggravated by climate change.
- Experts caution against unscientific desilting of water bodies.

A scientific team comprising experts from IIT Roorkee, IIT Palakkad, and IIIT Kottayam has proposed a new flood resilience initiative for Kerala. This project intends to leverage artificial intelligence, machine learning, remote sensing, hydrodynamic modeling, and high-precision rainfall forecasting to pinpoint flood-prone regions and deliver timely, accurate early warnings.
The initiative aims to establish a robust system for mitigating extreme rainfall events, urban waterlogging, riverine floods, and landslides. The experts highlighted the critical need to assess the environmental impact and effect on water flow before undertaking any desilting operations in rivers, lakes, and backwaters.
This proposed technological framework will enable authorities to proactively identify vulnerable areas and manage disaster risks effectively. Following the submission of the preliminary report, the state government is examining its technical and financial feasibility, with a decision expected within a month.
