Sky Ablaze: Two Meteor Showers Ignite July Sky
12 Jul
Summary
- Southern Delta Aquariids active July 12-Aug 23, peaking July 30-31.
- Perseids active July 17-Aug 24, peaking Aug 12-13.
- Both showers originate from cometary debris trails.
Stargazers can anticipate a busy celestial period as two significant meteor showers, the Southern Delta Aquariids and the Perseids, become active starting mid- to late July and continuing through August. The Southern Delta Aquariids will be visible from July 12 until August 23, with activity expected to be steady throughout late July and early August, and a peak around July 30-31.
Originating from Comet 96P/Machholz, these meteors leave a trail of dust and debris. Viewers may see around 15 to 20 meteors per hour under optimal dark, clear conditions, though this year's bright waning gibbous moon might reduce visibility.
Following closely, the Perseid meteor shower, renowned in the Northern Hemisphere, will be active from July 17 to August 24. Its peak is anticipated on the night of August 12 and early morning of August 13. Ideal viewing conditions are expected due to the New Moon during this peak.
Emerging from Comet Swift-Tuttle, the Perseids can produce an impressive 30 to 50 shooting stars per hour from dark, rural locations. For the best views of both showers, heading out in the early pre-dawn hours is recommended.
