ISS to Operate Until 2030, New Station Docks Aboard
17 Mar
Summary
- International Space Station expected to operate until 2030.
- New Russian Orbital Station modules will dock with ISS.
- First ROS crew will be current ISS astronauts during undocking.

The International Space Station (ISS) is projected to remain operational until the year 2030. Following this, its deorbiting process is scheduled to commence in 2030. Russia's upcoming Orbital Station (ROS) is set for a unique launch sequence.
The initial modules designated for ROS will be docked directly to the Russian segment of the ISS. Assembly of the ROS modules will occur while attached to the ISS. This integrated assembly will then be undocked closer to the end of the ISS's service life, ensuring continuity.
This strategy guarantees that Russia will maintain an unbroken record of human spaceflight. The cosmonauts serving aboard the ISS when the decision to undock the ROS modules is made will transition to become the first crew of the new Russian Orbital Station. The first ROS module is slated for launch in 2028.
